About Lithuania:
Lithuania is becoming a Baltic
and European treasure far more lovely than the amber jewel that is so prominent
along its coastline. Far more tasty and intoxicating than its award winning
beers... A far more fun than a barrel of monkeys, drinking a barrel of that
beer! The details of all that good stuff is inside and, better yet, if you
are visiting from an EU country, it's very likely that you will not have
to leave... unless you get impeached.
About Vilnius:
For outsiders anyway,
Vilnius
is a hard city to pin down. It's not quite Eastern European, not quite Scandinavian,
not Russian, and not German. It's not even quite Lithuanian. This ambiguity,
the diversity of influences, actually gives the city its unique character
and charm.
As many travel writers
are prone to pointing out, Lithuania's capital has a certain earthiness
that both Riga
and Tallinn lack. For this and other reasons, many visitors to the region
tend to fall madly in love with Vilnius, pegging it as their favourite Baltic
city of them all. As
London's
Sunday Times recently commented:
"Vilnius
may be
the most underrated capital in all of
Eastern Europe."
Visas:
More and more countries
are signing visa-free travel agreements with
Lithuania.
To date these include Australia, Canada, Eire, New Zealand, Switzerland
and the US, plus the EU and Nordic countries. All visitors planning on staying
for more than 90 days need to apply for either a residence or work permit.
Language: According
to the late French linguist Antoine Meilet (1866-1936) "If one wants to
know how our ancestors spoke, he has to come and hear the Lithuanian country
people speaking". As true now as it was in his day, this comment works just
as well if applied to city folk.
